Gurl it is hot, and your hair knows it! As much as we love to rock our fros in the winter, summertime is not fro time, it's protect that mane time. Here are some fun tips on how to keep your curls safe in the summer heat.
First tip for you, your hair is just as sensitive to the sun's heat as your skin is, this means that yeah, your hair can get sunburned. So how can we protect our hair from the sun since hair sunblock has not been invented yet? This is where protective styling comes in. Now you have some "hair gurus" who live by protective styling, and never let their luscious locks flow. I am not one of them, I believe in a little hang time, however, I am a stickler for taking advantage of protective styling in the summer. With the heat index on 110 degrees, leaving your hair in an unprotected style is like blow-drying it for 8 hours straight. This is a big no-no, and although there is more moisture in the air due to humidity, the amount of heat surrounding that humidity also makes it dangerous for your hair. You need protective styling in the summer.
What is protective styling? You may ask, well protective styles are any style that keeps your hair in one style for an extended period of time without having to restyle or manipulate your hair. They are also good for shielding your hair from the elements such as heat from the sun. My favorite protective style is box braids or cornrows, really any braiding I love. Not only is it cute, but also versatile, you can style the braids all different kinds of ways, especially if you're like me and like to switch it up from time to time. Flat twists, twists, extension twists, updo's, all of these are great protective styling ideas, and of course, when in doubt do some research, find what different styles are out there and try them out. Now, this one may be a little controversial especially for us natural ladies, but I am telling you, don't knock it until you have tried it. Wigs! Wigs are a great tool for protective styling during the summer. They are cute, versatile, easy to manage, and are very good protectors for your hair because they cover your hair completely. Not to mention, there are a new you in a bag, just saying, have some fun with them. They can be a little hot, so make sure you try a length that you can handle the heat in.
Lastly ladies, make sure that even though your hair is in a protective style, that you are still caring for it. Don't neglect your hair because it's packed away. Still clean it, even though it may be braided, and most importantly still add moisture. You can add your favorite moisturizer even with your braids in. If you're using your own hair for a protective style, don't leave it in for more than 1 week at a time so that you can clean and condition your hair before restyling. Also, if you plan to wig it up like I plan to do, every night still carry out your nightly hair regiment before bed, making sure to add moisture to your hair. These are some fun tips for managing your hair over the summer and still having fun and staying cute.
